Authentic Ngai Tahu Pounamu (NZ Greenstone)
Pounamu is regarded as a taonga by Māori, many of whom have a strong spiritual connection to the stone. They wear it with a sense of pride and they believe it bestows strength upon them. For hundreds of years, it has been imbued with legend and stories; and in many families, treasured pieces have been passed down through several generations.
Ngai Tahu Pounamu
We are proud stockists of Authentic Ngāi Tahu Pounamu. Each unique pounamu prominently displays both a mark of authenticity and a unique traceability code. When entered online this code identifies the origin and whakapapa of the stone. It will describe how it was extracted and processed and tell you who the artist was that carved it. It will explain that the stone has been treated according to the customary respect and carved with every possible care.
Why your stone is your stone
All Ngāi Tahu Pounamu pieces are individually hand-carved from genuine New Zealand greenstone. While the size, shape and design of your piece will closely match the photographed item, bear in mind that each raw-stone has unique characteristics formed over millions of years, giving every carved piece it’s own identity, colour and character.
The more you wear your Pounamu the more beautiful, unique and special it will become. Pounamu absorbs the natural oils from your skin over time which, when combined with constant skin contact, delicately polishes and enhances the lustre. This is what makes your stone uniquely yours, and why it becomes your taonga (treasured gift).
