Responsible Travelling

Responsible travelling around NZ

New Zealand is a very special part of the world, and our lakes, rivers, forests and mountains need to be treated with care, to ensure that future generations can enjoy them as well. While travelling in New Zealand we ask you to follow the Tiaki Promise and care for the people and the place for now and future generations.

The Tiaki Promise

Tiaki means to care for people and place. The Tiaki Promise is a commitment to care for New Zealand, for now and for future generations. New Zealand is precious, and everyone who lives and travels here has a responsibility to look after it. By following the Tiaki Promise, you are making a commitment to New Zealand. To act as a guardian, protecting and preserving our home. Nau Mai, Haere Mai Ki Aotearoa, Welcome to New Zealand.

Here's some tips to help you and others enjoy New Zealand:

  • Protect nature
Keep to roads and tracks, leave no trace, respect the wildlife and camp only where permitted.

  • Keep NZ clean
Pack it in, pack it out. Remove all rubbish including human waste. Check out this page to find out how to dispose of human waste properly in the outdoors.

  • Drive carefully
Keep left, stay alert and take breaks.

  • Be prepared
Know before you go, the five simple rules of the Outdoor Safety Code to help you stay safe.

  • Show respect
Respect our culture; wait your turn and give others time and space to enjoy their visit.

  • Do not light fires
For much of the year there is a prohibited fire season due to the dry conditions. Check before making any fires that it is permitted to do so.
